JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

APRIL 30, 1986

I took Genesis 1 and 2 to begin tonight. After I had read those chapters, my Father gave me something of a review of what He had been teaching me recently. He reminded me of the evil in the world and people’s casual attitude toward it. He used examples that I know of first-hand and sort of telescoped them out to give me a sense of the universal overview. But, then He reminded me that He was still in charge of things and that the ultimate victory was His. Again, He showed me love covering the multitude of sins. Finally, He showed me that to share His victory we must listen to Him and abide by His teachings. I felt, at last, that I was in step with the retreat, even though my Father had taken a circuitous route to the object of listening to Him.

With that done, I moved on to the next section. What the priest wrote about slovenliness and our trying to tell God how to run things was very meaningful. My Father showed me a few ways in which I was slipping in His service and my rebellion of the night before. I asked His help in overcoming my faults.

I hadn’t felt well all day, and as I was reading Baruch 2:11ff, I got too sick to make much sense of it. So, I offered the rest of my prayer period to my Father in Union with the Cross. I’ll return to this tomorrow.
