JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

FEBRUARY 17, 1986

I began with Psalm 8, and was struck by "What is man that you should be mindful of him?" and spoke to my Father about it. He reminded me that He had created the universe as an expression of His love. He had created me for the sole purpose of loving and being loved. I thought, then of the many times I had been unloving and had rejected His love. I am an unworthy creature. I asked His forgiveness and help. I can't be what He wants me to be without His aid.

There was a long series of interruptions. Finding an hour of quiet on a weekend or holiday is very difficult. I asked my Father if I should stop and come back to Him later, but He led me to offer the "wasted" time to Him in union with the Cross of my Brother. He helped me remain patient and somewhat recollected throughout the interruptions.

When things quieted down, He led me to Psalm 19, where I lingered over "Cleanse me of my unknown faults!" This is exactly how my Father has been working with me in recent months. One by one, He has been showing me those areas where I need to improve. I thanked Him for all His help, and especially for His gentleness with me. He gave me the imagery, then, of a diamond cutter working on a rough stone, polishing it, and cutting the facets. That was very encouraging. Bit by bit, He is forming me into what He wants me to be. That's what I want to be!

We moved on James 4: 13-17: "You are a vapor that appears briefly and vanishes" is so true. How brief is our existence compared to our Father's eternity. Yet, such tender care He gives us. Amazing!
