JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

MAY 8, 1986

I took Ezekiel 26 and Jeremiah 30 as tonight’s readings. In both, I found strong themes of hope and justice. My Father showed me how little of both there are in the world. So, by His prompting, I spent most of this prayer period in intercessory prayer that He would give us these graces. He showed me, briefly, that He was working toward these goals through His loyal people. He gave me reason to be hopeful and to rejoice in this knowledge. He will bring good from the way things are, and He is in charge.

I did doze off once while I was praying, but I think I continued to pray even as I slept. I woke up in the middle of the Our Father! And I don’t remember starting it. In fact, I don’t use form prayers during my prayer periods. I’ve done this before, though. I’ve awakened in the middle of the night in the middle of a prayer. I wonder if we do pray in our sleep sometimes.
