JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

Please see Introduction

APRIL 3, 1986

I began with 1 John 4: 10. It was, as it was meant to be, a lesson on forgiveness. Rather than teach me about His willingness to forgive me, my Father spoke to me of my need to forgive the teachers who have made it so difficult for John. He helped me by assuring me that He will bring something good from the situation. It does make it so much easier when you can see the "empty tomb" in advance! (1)

Part of the good that will come will be help for other kids with a similar problem, or at least a greater awareness of this type of problem. When things settle down, and I have the whole picture, my Father wants me to write John’s story for the Mensa Bulletin, so the teachers and parents who read it won’t be so hasty in labeling young people with poor penmanship as lazy and can seek help for them before the problem is complicated by others. This I will do gladly. It will be part of my little boy’s "resurrection" after the "cross" he’s carried for so long. (2)

(1) Spiritual director: It’s a gift.

(2) Spiritual director: You’re doing many things to bring good from a very difficult situation.
