JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

APRIL 1, 1986

I took Romans 8: 28 – 39 as my first passage for today. Through verse 37, “Yet in all this we are more than conquerors because of him who has loved us,” my Father reinforced what He had taught me earlier about the victory of the Cross.

Through Revelations 7: 9 17, my Father gave me rest beside the life-giving water. I had worked late on the Prayer SIG newsletter, and was very tired. The next thing I knew, I was waking up from a nap.

I tried to move on to the next passage, knowing that if I lingered further with the images from Revelations I would only go back to sleep, But, the peaceful imagery stayed with me very strongly, and I surrendered to it.

This seemed to please my Father, and a gentle companion joined me beside the peaceful stream. It was a frisky little lamb. I had no feeling that this was the Lamb of the Scripture passage. I can’t imagine the Lamb trying to nibble my hair as this one did! Rather, this one’s presence was of gift of joy from a loving Father, symbolizing no deep mystery, only His love. I accepted it gratefully, and the sleep that came with it. I did have the feeling that my Father accepted my work today as a sort of prayer. So, I felt no guilt at sleeping away most of the prayer time.
