JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

FEBRUARY 24, 1986

Following along with the God’s Word Today readings, I began with Luke 5, trying to put myself into the scenes, to “live” them. (1) After reading of how Jesus told Peter to go back out after a night of futile fishing, and how he came back with two boat-loads, my Father spoke to me very briefly. He showed me how often human endeavors, particularly my endeavors, are futile. But, by bringing Him into the project, we also bring His blessings. He wants to be my partner, as it were, in all that I do, even in those things that aren’t particularly spiritual. He gave me all of my abilities, and wants to help me develop them all.

This was an answer to a prayer. The editor of another SIG newsletter (2) has asked me to take over for him, and I wasn’t sure if I should. It would take a lot of time. However, the ability to put out a decent newsletter is one of the gifts He has given me. The two boatloads seemed symbolic of two SIG newsletters. With His help, I can handle them both.

My Father delivered the message and then was gone. Reading on in Like 5, I came to the figures of the new and old wineskins. I’ve never understood this, and I asked Him about it. Nothing. I waited and then found myself dozing off. I tried Luke 6 – dryness, and more dozing off. The time seemed to crawl.

(1) Spiritual director: I’m glad you know how to do this. You’ll probably need this skill later in the retreat.

(2)Current comment: Special Interest Group newsletter in Mensa; I already edited the Catholic SIG newsletter.
