JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

It was so good to have my Father back with me tonight!

We began with Luke 24:36-53, and the concept of being “clothed with power from on high” against Satan really struck me. This is what happens to us when we give ourselves to the things of God: He wraps His goodness around us like a cloak. Within the shelter of it, only good can come from all the evil Satan can throw at us. I savored this thought for quite a while.

Then my Father led me on to John 15: 1-8, 16-17. In both sections Our Lord says that if we take on the things of God, our Father will grant us what we wish. Since I am willing to take on more fully the things of God, I felt this to be an invitation to ask of Him. So, I spent a while in intercessory prayer for others and myself.

We went then to Ephesians 1:15-23. There was something about the cadence and wording of this that brought to my mind the song “Day by Day.” I began singing to my Father, and I realized that the words: “O sweet Lord, three things I pray: to know Thee more clearly, to follow Thee more nearly, to love Thee more dearly, day by day,” spoke to the heart of why I began this retreat. I spent the rest of my prayer time singing this in petition, and alternating it with the Prayer of St. Francis as set to music in Brother Sun, Sister Moon. It was a beautiful time, and as I prayed I knew I would be answered. Day by day, I would learn to know, follow, love, and be an instrument. I feel ready to move on to the next section.
