JOURNEY is the fruit of an experiment in spiritual direction by mail based loosely on The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius. It chronicles the day-by-day growth of a soul reaching out to God.

FEBRUARY 20, 1986

I began using the addition readings today. I wasn’t feeling well at all, and my Father led me gently through them, letting me feel His presence close to me, strengthening me, letting me rest. I read Psalms 136, 139, and 131; Isaiah 40: 12ff.; Sirach 2; Revelations 3: 20; and Matthew 10: 29-31. I had read several of these before, and they had accused me of my faults. Today, however, they drew my Father and me closer. Only once did He seem to require anything of me beyond the offering of my discomfort. The refrain about His mercy in Psalm 136 spoke to me of how greatly His mercy is needed in the world today, so I spoke to Him awhile, putting the world into His hands, and asking His mercy on it. I couldn’t seem to find words for the prayer, so I prayed through a symbolic visual image - a small girl handing a battered, scarred globe to her father to fix. The time went moderately fast.
